Discover how artificial nest boxes make a big difference, and join us in building a brighter future, one box at a time.
Habinest is an educational platform that promotes artificial nest boxes as a sustainable solution for parrot conservation in the Philippines. Featuring engaging multimedia, interactive 3D models, and inspiring stories from local initiatives, it raises awareness, guides breeders and communities, and motivates action to protect the nation’s rich bird biodiversity.
The Philippines is home to 594 recorded bird species—many found nowhere else on Earth, and is ranked 58th in global avian diversity. However, it also ranks 8th worldwide for threatened bird populations, with 93 species (15.6%) at risk, including the Palawan Parrot and the critically endangered Philippine Cockatoo. Nearly 30% of the country’s 258 endemic species face extinction.
This crisis is driven by rapid deforestation from logging, agriculture, and urban expansion, especially in critical areas like the Sierra Madre and Palawan. Loss of primary forests means fewer natural nesting sites, directly threatening bird reproduction. Scientific studies suggest the Philippines may harbor up to 50% more bird species than currently recorded—species that could disappear before they are even discovered. Artificial nest boxes offer a promising lifeline, mimicking natural tree cavities and providing safe breeding spaces in degraded habitats. While not a substitute for forest restoration, these interventions can support vulnerable parrot populations, buying time for long-term conservation and safeguarding the nation’s extraordinary biodiversity for generations to come.
